On Tuesday you will sit the following exam question:

All media texts tell stories.’

In what ways is narrative used in the media products in your case study?

You will refer to the three short films, Life of Pi and your three case studies considering how the different narratives are shaped and why they shaped in this way. For example, the Life of Pi narrative is far more straightforward than the original novel – why might this be? What issues do feature length films face in comparison to novels or TV series? How does this affect the representation?

As an introductory task at the start of the AS course we looked the excellent C4 advert, ‘Meet the Superhumans’.

For your homework I would like you to watch the advert again and answer the following questions on your blog:

1. Give detailed examples of how the advert represents the Paralympians as powerful and postive characters. Make sure you use media language within your analysis.

2. Describe the effect the sound editing might have on the audience.

3. How is the core message of the advert anchored throughout the advert?

4. How does this representation of disabled people compare with other representations that you know?

5. Do you think that this an effective advert? Justify your point of view with examples and explanation.

Watch the trailer for the upcoming film Lawless.

1. Now deconstruct the mise en scene

Lighting, costume, camera shots, camera angles, camera movements, setting

2. Consider how the narrative  of the trailer is shaped – is there evidence of anchorage? When are there moments of high tension? How is tension created? What conflict is evident? What enigma codes are apparent?

3. What is the genre of the trailer?

4. Who is the trailer primarily targeted at?

5. What elements of the text might attract audiences?
